INTRINSIC ASPECTS ANALYSIS
OF LITERARY WORK
In
this paper, the researcher discussing and analyzing the intrinsic unsure
consisting of Theme, Plot, Setting, Point of View, Major and Minor Character
contains of work entitled “Evil Tricks of the Antagonist Character as Reflected
in Charles Dickens’ Bleak House: A Mimetic Approach.
1. Theme
A theme often regarded as author’s way to communicate
and shares ideas, perceptions, and feeling with the reader. It can be said that
the theme is the main idea or the control topic of the work.
The
theme of the novel Bleak House included: (1) The legal system of Victorian. For
example: corrupt legal system undermines social welfare, sends people to grave,
and injustice. (2) Children suffer in Victorian England. This happened on
little Jo. He doesn’t have parents and he becomes street-sweeper. (3) More
humane. It can be seen on the novel that John Jarndyce generaly open his home
to Esther Summerson, Ada Claire, and Richard Carstone. Captain Hawdon (Nemo
gives coin to little Jo and treats him kindly. (4) To prevent a scandal. Lady
Deadlock’s sister tells her that her illegitimate child was dead. Later, Lady
Deadlock hides from her husband that she bore a child from another man. (5)
London is appallingly filthy. Dickens crusaded to clean up London. In Black
House, he present London his time: smoky, muddy, greasy. Some citizen in London
and its environs had to drink contaminated water. (6) Lady Deadlock’s
secret/scandal in her past.
2. Plot
A
plot is an element of a novel. By the existence of the plot, the reader will be
anxiously waiting for the future action. The plot is divided into exposition,
conflict, climax falling action and resolution.
a.
Exposition
The story begin in a room of Lady
Dedlock’s big house in the London; their visit their attorney, the sinister,
Mr. Tulkinghorn. In this exposition, the author also introduce big events
initiates to become the begining of the conflict in the story. The event is
about the desire of the antagonist character of this novel to learn Lady
Dedlock’s past and tries to control her conduct, to preserve the reputation and
good name of Sir Leicester.
b.
Conflict
The conflict happens when Mr.
Tulkinghorn visits Sir Leicester and Lady Dedlock to inform about Jarndyce.
3. Setting
The
setting of the story can be defined as the place and time in which the story
takes place. As one of the elements of a story, the setting plays an important
role like the plot and characters. The setting of a story means the place and
time of occurrence that include the physical environment of a story. The story
takes place in a certain time and social background. The setting can be
categorized into three parts: the setting of place, the setting of time, the
setting of social background.
a. The
setting of place
The setting of place is in Bustling,
London under blanked of fog, smoke in the country of Hertfordshire, site of
Bleak House; and in the country Lincolnshire, site of Deadlocks’ country
estate, Chesney Wold.
b. The
setting of Time
The setting of time of Black House novel
is in the middle of the 19th Century, when Queen Victoria sat on the English
throne.
