Cyber Education Phenomenon:
The Radical Shifting of Transferring Value to Transferring Knowledge



            The modern society often associated the usage of technology in Indonesian education system as a revolutionary step to answer the world education challenge recently. They assume that the use of technology can improve the student ability to comprehend the material given by the teacher easily that affect directly to the students’ quality.In reality, the use of technologies sometimes doesn’tbecome one of the components which determine thestudents’ quality. The students’ quality usually will appear from the inside motivation of students itself. So that although the students use the high technology in the learning process, the learning goal will not might be achieved easily. To answer this question, many efforts tried by the government to fulfill the society demand. One of the efforts is implementing the new education system that often used in Europe. This system called ‘Cyber Education’. This system makes the teaching and learning process can be executed everywhere and every time. It uses the internet as the basic media of the learning process. So, when the students want to learn, they only turn on the computer, connect to the internet, and learn through the video conference. The cyber education maybe can become the answer of the society question only for a while; after that many educational experts believe that it only make the new problem for Indonesia. One problem that maybe happened is education discrimination because these education systems automatically only given by the government to the upper class society while the middle class and lower class do not have a chance to enjoy this educational system.Moreover, it can increase the student motivation to learn the material from the teacher because the material provided usually completed by the video illustration making the students will be able to comprehend the difficult concepts of the subject. But, the video illustrations are not always becomes a guarantee the student will achieve a high score because the students’ learning style is very different. Furthermore, this education system is not demanding the students to fill the student’s presence. The students who want to study together only asked to enter the password and then, they can do this. With this system, many people believed that the parents also can be easily to observe the progress of their children during and after the learning process. Not the parent and the students only, but the teachers also will be able to assess the student easily especially for cognitive assessment because when the teachers want to give the tasks, they only give it to the students by e-mail. Then the students do the task and reply to the teacher with the task answer. The problem appearing now is attitude problem, where if the student only fills the presence in online way, the teacher can’t control the students’ attitude. It also contrasts with the teachers’ role as an actor to transfer the education value. The service provided by this technology is not only the learning process, but also the administration system. These systems are including the total administration fee having to pay by the students.  It makes the parents are easy to control the money outcomes of their children. These practices have been accepted by the minority of the society as the brilliant government’s effort in education. But, sometimes it still invites the parent confusedness about how to fill the education administration. It happened in the middle class and low class society, where they can’t operate the online paid system.           
On the contrary, the majority of society feels that this education system is unacceptable because actually Indonesia is unready to implement this education system. The Indonesian unready can be known from the society situation conducting the education system on every district that very various. This reality has becomes the common secret that Indonesia also has the different society and the different culture that affect directly to this education system implementation. For instance when the government implement this system in Papua the students might be respond differently than the students in the big city such as Jakarta, Jogjakarta, or the other districts. Many people who is disagree in the implementation system assume that when the government use this system the students enjoying these facilities only the students comes from the upper class society who is usually comes from the big city, meanwhile the other student coming from the village or isolated place can’t enjoy it because not all student mastering the communication technology, so, they can’t follows this education program. The easiness of education access maybe give many benefits to the both the teacher and the parent. But, ironically, it can invite the disorder behavior such asthe students who is using this chance in free time to access the website which is contain the restricted website, for instance : online game consisting of violence unsure, the impolite picture and the other material only making the worst things for the students.The education expert also afraid if this education system precisely makes the student unmotivated because theyfeel inferior to the other. It influenced by inability of the students to be the same with others because of his weaknesses. This case also becomes a contradictive with the education purpose mentioned in the Indonesian basic rules 1945 that say: Education service must be enjoyed by all Indonesian society. If this condition is still continue, it will invite the education’s discrimination. Where the rich becomes more and more rich and the poor becomes more and more poor especially in education. Moreover, the education expert can be more and more worried if this education system precisely causes the long gap between the student from low class society and the students from the high class society causing the unhealthy competition from both of them. The other problem appears is the disappearance of the human values, such as respect to the others, discipline, diligent, social relation and the students’ responsibility. As we know that these points are the most important thing that has to develop by the teacher in the learning process. MunifChatib in his seminar has been said that the education system which is  do not touch this component, an education system can be said as the robotic school  It happened because the student who is learning with this media does not get the education value from the teacher. As we know that the nature of education is not only the process of both transfer of knowledge and transfer of problem solving, but also transfer of value which in reality this component often forgotten by the teacher in the education process. This system cause the teacher can’t assess the student affectively. Meanwhile, the nature of affective assessment is the teacher effort to know the affective factor of the student who is following the learning process and also to promote the students ability.
The education system actually must fulfill the three aspects of education: Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor. These three aspects called Taxonomy Bloom. Without these aspects the education’s goal will not be achieved. Many education institutions those only pay attention to one aspect of educations. The aspect which most focused by them is cognitive aspect, where the students only do some drills given by the teacher. This irony appears in the Cyber Education system. Where in this system only pay attention to the students’ ability academically. So maybe the government can change the society’s paradigm about cyber education. One of them is the government must be socialize this program before it implemented in the learning process. The socialization effort can be done through several media such as printed media : newspaper, magazine, poster, pamphlet, brochure or electronics media such as : radio, television or internet. It has to execute by the government to retain the education shock. The governments also have to decrease the education cost, so all class society can enjoy the cyber education system. If it is impossible to executed, it means that the government is not yet ready to establish this education system. It’s better than the government must be focus first on the education system distribution because there are some districts that in reality lack educated because the government can’t provide the standard facility for the national education standard.
In the last of this essay the writer wants to convey a message to the government : “Please think before deciding”. The education is something which have to becomes the public consumption. So don’t make the society especially in middle and low level can’t enjoy the education service. For the final statement: “It’s better than the government immediately looking for the solution for this problem, so this polemic is not happened again in the future.

WESTPROGKIDZ



SEMUA TENTANG WESTPROGKIDZ

 Westprogkidz adalah sebuah blog yang dibuat pada bulan Maret tahun 2013 oleh mahasiswa Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. Blog ini dibuat semata-mata hanya untuk berbagi ilmu pengetahuan, inovasi dan teknologi. Nama Westprogkidz muncul tidak dengan tiba-tiba, tetapi dengan melalui beberapa proses. Dimana pada awalnya blog ini bernama Silent Kidz yang lahir dari filosofi pembuatnya sendiri yang senang melukiskan idenya dengan seni menulis, namun karena nama ini sudah dipakai oleh orang lain, maka pembuat blog mencoba untuk mencari nama yang lain. Nama kedua yang sempat muncul X Blue Blogger. Nama X Blue diambil dari nama salah satu daerah di kecamatan Kokap yaitu Kalibiru yang berlokasi di desa Hargowilis. Namun karena pembuat blog tidak berdomisili di Kali Biru, maka dia mempertimbangkan bahwa nama ini masih kurang tepat. Akhirnya, penulis mulai berpikir tentang hal yang sederhana, yaitu kabupaten tempat blogger berdomisili yaitu Kulon Progo. Karena pembuat blog adalah seorang mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris, maka dia ambil nama Kulon Progo dalam bahasa Inggris yaitu "Westprog" ditambah dengan kata "Kidz" yang diambil dari nama sebelumnya (silent kidz). Maka dari itu lahirlah nama Westprogkidz. Dalam westprogkidz dapat ditemukan beberapa informasi tentang isu-isu pendidikan, Teknik Pembelajaran , Teknologi pembelajaran, sampai dengan materi pembelajaran. Informasi-informasi ini dikelompokkan kedalam beberapa kategori, diantara kategori-kategori informasi tersebut diantaranya: 

1. Home: Berisi semua hal tentang Westprogkidz, Presentasi: Berisi semua materi-materi yang akan dipresentasikan dalam forum perkuliahan maupun forum yang lainnya,

AUTHENTIC TEACHING: IT’S TIME TO BRING THE SENSE OF UNIVERSE INTO THE CLASS

            Teaching, teaching, and teaching! What do you think about that? Are it just functioned as the transfer of knowledge, science, theory, value or maybe speech? If you assume that one of them is right, please think again. Recall your memory about what was your parent do to make you learn in the process of your growth. When you can’t speak, your mother always teach you how to speak naturally, isn’t it?   Do you know the technique used by your mother to do that? Are they immediately teach you about the language grammatical structure? I think it’s impossible because the children always learn about everything indirectly.  One of the techniques used is your parent always encourage you to interact with them by asking you to respond their speech continually. Whatever your respond your parent always give you applause, although sometimes your parent did not know about what did you talking about. Do you know what’s your parent means by letting you free to respond their speech? Because your parent wants you to learn naturally and authentically. In general, this is can be assumed as the nature of authentic teaching. Authentic teaching refers to the teaching activity executed by the teacher using the materials which comes from the daily life of the student that actually these materials are not intentionally made for the learning activity in the class as the parent who is always teach their children by using the material provided by them and by their environment. Unfortunately the concept of authentic teaching is begin to vanish when the children learn in the formal education institution such as in Elementary School, Junior High School, or Senior High School. It happened because the teachers of those schools mostly prefer use the textbook than create the materials themselves to undergo the teaching process no matter do this way is effective or not. They think that the textbook is everything, the textbook is the guidance, the textbook is the goal, and the textbook is the source of all learning source. To change these paradigms, this essay try to persuade the teachers of all education level to implement  the concept of authentic teaching into their class.  It wants to elaborate some advantages providing in the authentic teaching method,  viewed from Teacher’s role, the material’s use, the students role, and the effect of teaching to the students
           Teaching activity using authentic teaching method encourages the teacher’s role to gain the students’ motivation and students’ participation more effective and efficient. It caused by the basic concept of authentic teaching which can automatically invite the students’ participation in the learning process because basically these materials come from the students’ daily life. By using the Authentic Teaching, the teacher will knows about the background knowledge of the student. Background knowledge is the early ability of the student obtained from their environment. When the teachers know about the background knowledge of the student, they will be able to determine the teaching strategies used in the learning process. Authentic teaching also gives the teacher a wider space to be more creative in determining their teaching material to engages their background knowledge. An authentic teachers can used everything provided in the class to be a learning materials, for example, when the teacher teach about the descriptive text in English, they can use the picture provided in the class such as President and the vice president, heroes, or maybe the teacher can also use the properties of the class such as student chair, teacher’s table, teacher’s cupboard, and ruler rather than the teacher show the material and picture on the textbook. Unfortunately many teachers think that the preparation of the teaching activity in authentic teaching is wasting time, meanwhile the government have been determine the time allocation to undergo the learning process in the class during 1 semester. So, the teacher assumes that this teaching technique is impossible to cover all materials to be taught during 1 semester. Maybe, its becomes a big problem by the less experience teacher, but for the experienced teacher having been know about the concept of authentic teaching this is not a serious problem. They can ask the students to learn outside the class and learn together about the lesson given by using the material provided by the nature. This activity break the less experience teacher’s assumption that teaching activity using authentic materials are wasting time in preparation.
The second advantage provided by the authentic teaching is the material used. Materials’ used in this teaching method absolutely comes from the students’ environment. So,  the learning activity can be executed naturally. The authentic teaching try to make all materials provided by the nature become useful. The materials  also easy to gained by the teacher and do not require much money. According to Martinez (2000:1) the authentic  material makes the students can exposed to real discourse, as in videos of interview with famous people where intermediate students listen for general idea, it means that the authentic materials help  the students to have a link between the lesson learned and the students’ experience in the real life, so the learning activity is meaningful. Secondly, authentic materials keep students informed about what is happening in the world, so they have an intrinsic education value. The authentic material give a sense to the students that the world are always evolved and change periodically, it makes the students are able to think critically to the issues happened in the world and always think more about solution of the word problem then just gives some critics. Fourth, the authentic materials support the students to extend their vocabulary and to memorize them in a number of meaningful recycling. It indicates that the authentic materials also empower the students’ brain to memorize what they have learned easily.    
The third advantage is the students’ role. As we know that recently the world  education paradigm demanded the students to becomes the educational agent. Meanwhile the students need the new teaching strategies to accommodate these demand. Unfortunately some teaching strategies used by the teacher must be require the use of technology in the learning process, it invite the anxiety from the education’s experts because not all education institution applying the technologies in the learning process. To support the students fulfill the demand, the teacher should be determine the teaching strategies in the class with or without the support of technology. Authentic teaching here provide an active student’s participation system, where the students becomes the main actors of the leaning activity. the authentic materials make the students have the high sense of responsibility. It caused by the sense of belonging of the students. One major factors of the successful English learning and teaching is growing and embodying the sense of responsibility and the sense of belonging in the learning activity .  
The last advantage is the authentic teaching will give the long life learning experience to the student. The long life learning experience is very important for the student because the material learned will memorized in the long term memory. In the psychology science there are two memory systems containing in the brain. The first one is short term memory. The short term memory is the part of the brain that catch the memory and save it only for the short time. the second one is the long term memory, the long term memory can catch the memory and save it for a long time.  the long term memory usually used by the students to receive something meaningful in their life such as childhood memories, embarrassment memory, and exciting memories. while, the short term memory used by the students to remember something abstract which never embody on the students’ daily life such as theory, formulation, concept and system. The authentic teaching created to make not only the learning activity but also the learning materials can be received by the long term memory because the authentic teachers always try to give the student the concept together with the application in the daily life. In language science like English, when the authentic teachers teach about the sentence structure they will not teach about the concept and position of the subject and predicate in the sentences, but they will teach the use of this sentence, so the student will be able to know the function of the sentence in the daily communication. If the students know about the use of sentence, the students automatically becomes highly motivated to learn the language which directly gives the direct influence to the student to mastering the English language especially on the use of English sentences, and this is THE AUTHENTIC TEACHING.
Basically, the role of authentic teaching is bringing the science into the reality. Where everything that actually are not directed to the learning activity used as the learning materials. The authentic teaching are always try to raise the students background knowledge and engage the relationship between the students experience and the learning materials because the material learned mostly comes from the students’ daily life. It will makes the learning activity in the class meaningful and exciting. The authentic teaching method has a purpose to return the real concept of teaching having been long dissapeared that states: TEACHING IS NOT ONLY ABOUT AN EFFORT TO BRING THE KNOWLEDGE AND VALUE TO THE STUDENT, BUT ALSO IT’S AN EFFORT TO BRING THE SENSE OF UNIVERSE IN TO THE CLASS.
